Privacy Policy

The short version: the game does not require an account, and we collect as little as we can.

This policy describes our current intent and practice for the browser build. It has not yet been reviewed by a lawyer, and it will need to be finalised — and dated — before the Android app is submitted to Google Play. Treat it as a good-faith draft rather than a final legal document.

Who we are

What the Chess? is an independent strategy game. In this policy, “we” means the team that makes and operates the game. You can reach us at hello@whatthechessgame.com.

What we collect

The browser game is playable without an account. We do not ask for your name, and we do not require you to register or sign in to play.

  • Game preferences and progress may be stored locally in your own browser or device. That data stays on your device and is not sent to us as personal information.
  • Basic technical information, such as your browser type and approximate region, may be processed by our hosting provider in order to serve the site and keep it secure.
  • If you submit a form on this site, we receive only the details you type into it.
  • We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for advertising.

Forms on this site

Two forms currently exist: nonbinding interest in the physical game, and player feedback. Where the interest form is concerned, you may choose to give an email address, an approximate quantity and a country. Feedback is accepted without an email address unless you want a reply.

As of this release, neither form is connected to storage, and each says so plainly on screen before you submit. Nothing typed into them is retained. When storage is connected, submissions will be used only to gauge demand and to improve the game, and this policy will be updated first.

Children

The game is suitable for a general audience, but it is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we will remove it.

Your choices

  • You can clear locally stored game data at any time by clearing site data in your browser.
  • You can ask us what we hold about you, and ask us to delete it.
  • You can withdraw an email address from the interest list at any time by asking us.

Changes to this policy

As the Android app and the physical edition progress, this policy will change. Once finalised it will carry an effective date, and material changes will be noted here.
